the real thing

#picstitch

the skies have been crazy beautiful in jackson lately. I think it must have to do with the changing seasons. leaving the house before 7am is a little more palatable when I get to the top of the hill on fortification street & see the sky all lit up. & the sunsets have been wonderful too. every time I see the sky so glorious I try to take a picture of it… but I’m always disappointed in the result, because it’s not nearly as good as the real thing.

lots of times I wish I took more pictures… pictures of people, pictures of events. I’m a little bit obsessed with trying to remember life. & pictures help with that. but sometimes– even though I regret my lack of photographic documentation–when an event is over & I think “oh no, I forgot to take pictures,” I am secretly a tiny bit happy. because if I wasn’t thinking about taking pictures, chances are I was pretty busy living it. & after all… the pictures wouldn’t have been nearly as good as the real thing.

that’s one of my favorite truths about life, I think. the real thing is always better. we live in a society of vlogs & instagram… but real sunsets are better, every single time. pictures of skies, of proposals, of babies, of pretty much anything good & beautiful & true– none of that can come close to the actual experience. so I’m learning to take a break from documentation & just enjoy things. things like the sunsets that send me into work in a good mood, Sunday afternoons reading with David, 2am talks with sister, delta cotton in full bloom, eating around a table with people I love, crunchy leaves. just to name a few.

we live in a great big beautiful world… a vivid, 3d world of flesh & blood, full of things that can not only be seen but smelled & touched & tasted & felt. this place is fallen but it is beautiful & it is good. in a way that can’t be fully captured or experienced by anything other than an authentic human being. & we get to be those human beings. we get to live here. some days that kind of blows my mind.

p.s. interesting article from Relevant on social media & sacred moments.

& a week later, I am back in the land of the living. really, what that means is that AT&T & a friend worked very hard to get my little house online. Patrick, thanks for poking around outside in the dark… AT&T, thanks for being approximately a million times better than Comcast.

the last week has been incredibly busy. moving out of DSU & into Fondren. spending time with my family… they helped me move & I owe them big time. seeing college friends. meeting at my school. unpacking, unpacking, unpacking. going on a bunch of Craigslist pick ups (the internet is sometimes awful but also sometimes awesome). making new friends. bike riding to the farmer’s market. kickball in Clinton. sharing popsicles with Target employees. cook out in the park. building forts with Carter & Dylan. life here is overwhelmingly full. sometimes that’s a mixed blessing. but this week, I’m thankful.

& that is Arizona really quickly from my phone. a few highlights…

hiked a little around the rim of the grand canyon. got some solar viewers & climbed down into the canyon a bit to watch the annular eclipse. I had never used solar viewers before– they were so cool, kinda like crazy intense sunglasses. then watched the sunset… got to see two Arizona sunsets this weekend &, well, they’re really pretty. but living on a coast sure has spoiled me in that regard.

Nathan found us a perfect spot in between the grand canyon & havasu falls & we camped there a couple of nights. yesterday we hiked havasu falls. we had to take route 66 for a bit to get there, which was kinda fun. the waterfalls were lovely. I had read some conflicting stuff on the internet about day hiking it… it’s over ten miles one way & most people stay the night. we decided to try to hike there & back anyway. not the wisest choice ever (midday Arizona sun is killer), but it came out alright in the end. & on the way  out we spotted that lovely “NO DAY HIKING” sign. whoops.

& as always, the best part of travelling (or of anything, really) is the people. made friends on both plane rides over… lady from 2nd plane invited us to dinner. we watched the eclipse with a random guy who worked for park services. met so many friendly hikers. people in stores & hotel lobbies & german girls at the campground & nice gas station cashiers. people are awesome, ya’ll.

…speaking of wonderful people, I get to see 13 of my favorite people (my family + this family) in california tomorrow. excited… be back next week!

bridge walk with Carey. breakfast at Friend Green Tomato. running with my dad. so much reading. pool time with Hannah. popsicles!! (the bluebell lime ones are so so good.) thrift store with Rachel. pretzels with Wilson. the best skies. rec league baseball games with the grandparents. lots of good talks with mom. fresh fruit in the fridge, always.

home has been real lovely. tomorrow Nathan & I leave to take on the grand canyon. I asked him yesterday if he thought we should “practice setting up the tent.” my eagle scout brother was utterly offended & refused. let’s hope things go smoothly. right now my biggest problem is picking which books to bring… that’s a good sign.
