color me rad

we had the most fun running the color me rad 5k in fondren! hannah & I were so proud of kate & her friends… what a cool 5k as your first race! it was really fun to see friends from college & work all over the place… even a few students. this was a colorful way to spend an otherwise dreary saturday morning… so thankful the rain held off. yay for fun stuff going on (almost) literally in your own backyard.

p.s. all pictures courtesy of my dad who spent his saturday morning
dabbling in professional race photography.
you’re the best!

:: when it rains outside, we play chess at recess. the kids get super into it, too. that’s how IB schools roll.

:: went to hear some music on the porch at the cedars with jenna & patrick. it’s been a little cooler at night this week though… enjoying that bunches.

:: a little bit about the history behind this famous black power image at the 1968 olympics. interesting stuff.

:: for lunch the other day I brought little ziplock baggies of spinach, carrots, cherries, strawberries & almonds. I took my lunch out to the playground to eat… a little kid ran up to scope out my food, wrinkled his nose & said “ummm, ms. broom, is that what people would call a ‘healthy snack’?” why yes, yes it is.

:: excited about this 5k.

:: david & I both made chalkboards for our rooms… piece of plywood, can of chalkboard paint, presto. same result but a whole bunch cheaper. I would very much like a whole chalkboard wall but for now this will do just fine.

:: sometimes textbooks are silly.

:: this is my first real saturday as in after a full real-world work week. it’s been spent so far at the farmers market, making breakfast & helping emily figure out her new blog. weekends are good stuff.

this past weekend my roommate Emily & I made a speedy trip to Pensacola for the Gulf Coast half marathon. we fit a whole bunch of fun (& a lot of miles) into 24 hours. after 4 music filled hours in the car (& a trip to Cracker Barrel), we went to the beach, where we accomplished what we could both probably agree was some of the best people watching of our rather extensive collective career. if you want to people watch, just go to Pensacola Beach during spring break. enough said.

one plus of half marathon training being over is that we no longer have to obsessively think about how much water we are drinking on any given day. in case you were wondering, Gatorade Recover is gross & Gatorade Prime isn’t much better. there is a reason why people usually just drink the G2 stuff.

we were excited that all the participants numbers also had names on them. people would occasionally do the whole awkward “I don’t know you but I’m working your name into our brief exchange because I read it on your name tag” type thing which I always enjoy. also, Emily’s phone takes pictures within our running app. sometimes this results in really hilariously bad pictures.

the sky was glorious that morning, the beach was super pretty to run alongside & it was a joy to do with one of my best friends. the first ten miles were a lot more fun than the last three point one, but overall it was such a good experience & I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I’m real thankful to God for being so gracious in giving us healthy bodies that willingly run, but even more so in giving us each other to do it with. as fun as this weekend was, even better were all the dozens of days of running, swimming, Healthplex workouts & water running where we talked about everything under the sun. it’s been fun, Em… now let’s do a tri!

(last) weekend in review

last weekend was all kinds of wet & rainy. but I just put on my boots & stomped in puddles, so all was well. friday night, a family from my church hosted a real fun houseshow… it was the kickoff show for our friend Ronnie’s Kickstarter project. go support him! (and if you’ve never heard of Kickstarter, make sure to click around… it’s a really cool concept.) it was a fun evening full of sweet friends, pretty music, good cookies & even some bananagrams.

then on saturday I went to dollar tree with my friend oliver… finally got glitter headbands (!!!!) so I can stop jacking my sister’s (thanks for the loaners han). we also bought a central park puzzle, which provided an afternoon of entertainment. for all interested… the clinton dollar tree has entire boxes of lisa frank stationary for just a dollar. it (almost) made me wish I was in 5th grade all over again.

that night emily, helen & I finally got around to using a pizza hut gift card (thanks mom!). we ate yummy veggie pizza & split a coke & missed leslie lots & lots. also… remember what I mentioned about helen’s clothes in my last post? well, her outfit of choice saturday was a sock monkey onsie. good day.

the rest of the weekend was full… watching a (surprisingly good) movie & running with emily & church. thankful for a couple of days that allow rest & renewal & just plain fun.
